Prologue: Dreams of the Hills
The wind blew softly across the hills of Telrath, making the blades of grass sway like a sea of green that stretched to the horizon. Aeryn sat on the edge of a cliff, watching the sky turn orange as the sun set. As a child, she had always dreamed of flying, of detaching herself from the world and leaving everything behind, of seeing the world from above, free from any constraints. She was convinced that if she could get on a dragon, she could find a new place for herself, one that no one would dare criticize.
In the valley below, he saw a formation of dragons flying in formation, their majestic bodies set in the colors of the sunset. Every time he saw them, his heart beat faster, and the desire to join them became more real, more urgent. This was what pushed her forward every day, despite every fear and obstacle.
In Telrath, however, dragon riders were legendary figures. Only the noblest and strongest were chosen to enter the prestigious Dragon Academy. Aeryn, an ordinary girl with a slight build and a family of farmers, seemed destined for a life of work in the fields. But in her heart she knew that her destiny was different, that she was born to ride the mightiest creatures in the world. And nothing, no insult, no difficulty, could have stopped her.
