The Ashes of Hope

The Ashes of Hope

The city was burning.

Jack Carter watched the flames reflect in the windows of empty skyscrapers, the sky above him clouded with black smoke. The streets, once crowded with life, were now the stage of a war without rules. Groups of looters moved through the debris as screams rang out in the distance, interrupted only by gunfire.

He was crouching behind an overturned car, his heart pounding in his chest and his lungs filled with dust and tear gas. Next to him, his son Ethan, just fourteen, was trembling but trying not to show it. Jack could see fear in her eyes, but also something more: a spark of determination. He was too young to go through all this. Too young to see the world fall apart.

“Dad, what do we do?” Ethan whispered, his voice cracking with terror.

Jack squeezed his shoulder, trying to give him a strength he barely felt he had. «Let’s find a way out. And then we don’t look back.”

There was no time to argue. There was no time to think about everything they had lost: their home, their friends, the future they had imagined. Now only one thing mattered: surviving. And Jack knew he would do anything to keep Ethan safe, even if it meant becoming what he’d spent a lifetime trying to leave behind.

As he guided his son through the shadows and rubble, one question rang in his mind: What happens when even hope is buried under the ashes?

He didn’t have an answer. But as night enveloped the city in flames, Jack swore to himself that he would find a way. For Ethan. For them. Even if it meant facing chaos and danger at every step.
